ROSELLE OR ZOBO DRINK AND YOUR HEALTH

INTRODUCTION: The ZOBO DRINK, also called ROSELLE DRINK or HIBISCUS DRINK, is derived from the HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA leaves also called ROSELLE leaves. It is taken from the HIBISCUS PLANT SPECIE, and dried. It is native to West Africa, but has spread to other parts of the world such as Sudan and Mexico. In Sudan, it is called KARKADE, SORREL by the Caribbeans and AQUAS FERCAS in Mexico.

The Zobo drink is a popular traditional or local drink in Nigeria. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, soluble fiber, organic acid etc. The drink works well with different food flavours ranging from (Ginger, Garlic, pineapple, lemon,  strawberry etc) depending on your preferred taste.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF ZOBO OR ROSELLE DRINK:

(1) ANTI CANCER:
Research has it that the zobo drink could help keep at bay cancer forming toxins, due to its high content of antioxidants. This antioxidants helps in straightening the immune system by fighting free radicals in the body system.

 Note hère that thé zobo leave, flower or drink falls between the category of RED coloured leaf or flower and PURPLE coloured leaf or flower, in which case now, it cannot be a vegetable but a flower that produces natural drinks exhibiting the properties of drinks from fruits with the history of red coloured fruits and vegetables. The zobo drink  helps to treat kidney disease, this is because of its content of organic acid ( about 15-30%). It helps the kidney to filter out waste products such as uric and oxalic acid that can constitute to the formation of kidney stones.

Note however that, in Treating kidney stones with Zobo drink,  the zobo drink is best consumed naturally, without any additives such as sugar in order to preserve the natural components which are oxidative, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory in nature.

MAKING ZOBO DRINK:

INGREDIENTS:

--- 1 custard zobo leaves or as required
----1-2 satchet artificial flavors (optional)
----1 chunk of ginger ( or as you like it)
----3-4 cubs of garlic (optional)
----1 lemon
---- Note  that other natural flavours such as fresh              pineapple juice and fresh orange juice could be          used,  depending on individual tastes

METHOD:

(a) Wash zobo leaves with cold water in a bowl

(b)  Put in a pot and cover the leaves with enough water.

(c)  Put to boil,  boil for10mins, then add garlic and ginger if in use.

(d)  Peel pineapple, if in use, then add the peel to the zobo that is boiling.

(e)  Boil zobo leave for 30 mins or till leaf is soft.

(f)  while zobo is boiling, extract your pineapple juice or orange juice or lemon juice if in use.

(g)  Allow already boiled zobo to cool, till its lukewarm

(h)  Using a strainer, strain to remove leaves and particles.

(I)  Add flavours of choice, natural or artificial, such as the already extracted pineapple, orange or lemon juice.

(j)  Mix well,  bottle and refrigerate. Add lemon slices for that extra minty fresh taste. Result is as depicted in the picture above.

CAUTION:

(1) According to various researches, it is said that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should keep off zobo drink,  as it can cause mis-carriage due to its ability to stimulate the blood stream.

(2) Regular consumers too,  should minimize zobo consumption, as too much or continual consumption will have a bad impact on the kidney.

Finally,  it's advisable you incorporate Roselle or zobo drink into your daily juice intake,
because it is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. these tend to exhibit the functions of anti-hypertensive, anti-bacterial properties in the body system as well as being rich in enzyme inhibitor,  that plays down on the sugar and fat content of our daily meal. BLACK VELVET TAMARIND, ICHEKU, LICKIE LICKIE AND MY HEALTH

INTRODUCTION: Growing up in typical African village in the Eastern part of Nigeria and having the full feel of village life is an awesome experience. This experience has eluded many youngsters of this present generation. The BLACK VELVET TAMARIND popularly called NKWAA in my native language, ICHEKU in Igbo generally, AWIN by the Yoruba, TSAMIYAR KURM by the Hausas or LICKIE LICKIE by children presently is native to tropical Africa with special reference to Eastern Nigeria. It is also found in other countries such as Senegal, Ghana, Thailand and Malaysia. In Nigeria, it is found in mini forests close to farmlands. It is a common seasonal fruit  snack among children and adults alike. 

The fruit has a black velvety outer shell, which when cracked reveals an orange coloured sticky pulp which  can be licked, as depicted in the picture below:

The fruit is sweet, creamy and sour to taste. It's sweetness is enhanced just like the AGBALUMO - the African Star Apple, when it is touched by rainfall.
The icheku fruit gets softer and lickable when it is soaked in water and the water penetrates it. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It is particularly rich in the following:

COMPONENTS:

VITAMINS: Vitamin A,  C,  Folic Acid, Thiamine, Niacin, Riboflavin, Tartaric Acid etc.

MINERALS: Copper, Potassium, Calcium, Iron,  Magnesium etc.

----1 cup peeled black tamarind
----1 cup warm water
----1 tsp honey (optional)

METHOD
----- Soak peeled tamarind in warm water above for           10 mins
----- Stir properly  with a spoon
----- Sieve,  Add honey, chill and serve.

Okra refers to the edible seedpods of the plant, it is basically known as food for the health conscious. It is also called LADIES FINGER in England or GUMBO in the US. Scientifically it is called ALBELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS, or HIBISCUS ESCULENTUS.  It is said to belong to the same plant family as hibiscus and cotton. It is native to Southern United States, parts of Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean and South America.  It has been known to help in managing blood sugar in cases of type1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

THE SOURSOP FRUIT AND MY HEALTH

INTRODUCTION: The graviola fruit or EVERGREEN fruit otherwise called the SOURSOP fruit is regarded as an evergreen fruit grown on an evergreen tree. The name soursop is basically due to its slightly acidic taste when ripe. It's scientific name is called ANNONA MURICATA, it is also called Custard appleCherimoya, Guanabana and so on. The fruit is heart shaped with rough green skin and soft fleshy spine. It has a creamy delicious taste that is cut between strawberry and pineapple.  It is rich in vitamins and minerals,  antioxidants and fiber. The fiber in the soursop fruit is both soluble and insoluble fiber

History has it that it is native to forests in Africa, but cultivated in parts of South America, Mexico and the Caribbean, sometimes in South East Asia and Florida. 12 HEALTH BENEFITS OF AFRICAN STAR APPLE YOU MAY NOT KNOW

INTRODUCTION: The African Star Apple, called "UDARA" in Igbo, "AGBALUMO" in Yoruba, and "CIWOH" in Hausa is another highly nutritious and yummy fruit found in tropical Africa in general with special reference to Nigeria and in the Western, Southern and Eastern Nigeria in particular. Scientifically it is called "CHRYSOPHLLUM ALBIDUM", it has up-to 4-6 seeds when opened, and it's shaped like star, hence the name "Star Apple".

The African Star Apple, just like any other fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. It is normally found in great abundance between the months December to April every year. It could be of a sweet sour taste in which case, you will hear  the sellers shouting (Nwa nnu nwa nnu) or a sour harsh taste which is (Nwa ose), but they will  never shout that,  because If they do,  it will attract bad sales for them.

At the end,  both species, the Sweet soured tasty ones and the harsh soured tasty ones are bought and enjoyed by all and sundry. The very sweet ones are so sweet that you will want to eat everything about it both flesh and skin alike.

12 HEALTH BENEFITS OF AFRICAN STAR APPLE:

(1) HEALTHY FOR EYES: African Star Apple, belongs to the group of fruits that has an orange coloured inside; Bearing in mind however,  that, orange and yellow coloured fruits are rich in antioxidants BETA-CAROTENE and ALPHA-CAROTENE, which are eventually converted to vitamin A by the body. This vitamin A is healthy for eyes and maintenance a healthy mucous membrane.

This carotenoid is said to have strong antioxidant qualities that is linked to cancer prevention and reduced risk of developing inflammatory disorders such as Rheumatoid arthritis. Ensure to incorporate African Star Apple in your daily fruit meal intake when in season to help curb these ailments.

It is also known  that those who make fruit a great part of their daily fruit meal intake live a longer and healthier life than those who do not.  In view  of these, oranges are one of those basic fruits which are common and basically found everywhere. It is easily accessible and affordable both by the rich and the poor.  It is consumed by almost everybody because of its sweet and succulent nature irrespective of the fact that it is rich in vitamin C and other health benefits, which many people who take oranges do not know about. The vitamin C  content helps it promote a clear and healthy skin,  and lowers the risk of many diseases. It is a tree cultivated in almost every part of the world (a footnote of a short history of orange will be given at the end of this post)

Oranges are used and consumed in a variety of ways,  ranging from juices, as depicted in the picture below, to  jam mamalades to facial mask and beauty treatments. NOTES: SHORT HISTORY ABOUT ORANGES: Research has it that oranges are  the largest citrus crop in the world. It was first grown in Southeast Asia,  Northeastern India and Southern China, it was cultivated in China around 2500 BC.  It now moved from India to Rome, then to North Africa in the first century AD. In 1493, it moved to Spain's Canary Islands by Christopher Columbus and to Haiti;  Then in 1518, oranges were introduced to Panama and Mexico and later to Brazil. In America however, it was first planted in 1513 in Florida by Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer, and with civilization,  it now spread to every part of the world including all nooks and cranny of Africa.

In all the health benefits of fruits generally can not be overemphasized, not forgetting the health benefits of oranges. Oranges not only regulate your blood pressure, but also helps to keep in check your cholesterol levels and at the same time help eradicate free radicals in your body system that are likely to be cancerous. It's a remedy for insomnia,  hot flashes and menopausal changes. An orange a day or three glasses of fresh orange juice in a week,  can go a long way to keep your health and your looks in check.
